Our Story
Calgary Single Mothers organization was founded by Shamaila Maqsood, a dedicated single mother passionate about empowering women and children. Her residence has been a shelter for many women both literally and metaphorically. Additionally, her online support system inspired the formation of this community group. The dramatic rise in single motherhood over recent decades, exacerbated by the challenges of the Covid pandemic, highlighted the urgent need for support and advocacy. Despite facing obstacles and dismissive attitudes from some quarters, Shamaila's determination only strengthened her resolve to advocate for single mothers. As a single mother herself for over a decade, she intimately understands the daily challenges they face.
Recognizing the importance of fostering a supportive and empowering community, the Calgary Single Mothers Society is committed to upholding the rights of its participants. These rights include the right to respect, privacy, inclusivity, support, open communication, participation, a safe environment, conflict resolution, non-solicitation, equal opportunities, cultural sensitivity, contribution, and transparent governance. Clear communication and active efforts to uphold and protect these rights are essential for promoting a positive and supportive environment for single mothers in Calgary.

Our commitment extends to breaking the stigma surrounding single motherhood and providing unwavering support to the mothers who significantly contribute to the fabric of our communities. Through these initiatives, we aim to make a positive impact, uplifting the lives of single mothers and nurturing a society that values and supports them.
